Where To Stay in Monterey, California

Monterey was originally the capital of California and a frequent setting in John Steinbeck novels. Today, it’s a popular vacation destination. With the Pacific Coast Highway passing through the city, it’s the perfect stop on the way to San Francisco. So when you’re next thinking about a coastal California escape, check out these five Monterey hotels. There’s an accommodation option to suit everyone and every budget.

Monterey hotels

Historic in the city

Why not stay somewhere unique in Monterey? Merritt House Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places and has just 22 rooms. The plush suites include fireplaces, living rooms and balconies overlooking the beautiful garden and picnic area. Furthermore, guests can take advantage of the in-room massage services and discount entry to a nearby fitness centre. With free breakfast and close proximity to Fisherman’s Wharf, Merritt House Inn is a great B&B option.

Lodge living by the beach

Monterey Bay Lodge really has it all. Located opposite Monterey State Beach, it has a heated outdoor pool and spa for use year-round. There’s also complimentary parking for road trippers and a 24-hour front desk. Furthermore, Monterey Bay Lodge has fantastic family suites available, with bunk beds and a TV equipped with the latest gaming console.

An elegant stay

As guests enter Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, they’re greeted with a beautiful water fountain and lobby area. The elegant touches continue in the rooms, with refrigerators, ocean views and desks for business travellers. Onsite, Schooner’s Coastal Kitchen specialises in seafood, while Vista Blue Spa has all your spa needs covered. The hotel also offers spa, romance and aquarium packages.

Sustainable and stylish

For visitors looking for an eco-friendly stay in Monterey, choose Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay. Every room includes mattresses made from renewable resources and organic toiletries. Did we mention the choc chip cookies on arrival too? The hotel also has a 24-hour fitness centre, heated outdoor pool and business centre. Furthermore, the on-site spa offers 60 different treatments to enjoy. There are also two on-site restaurants, which have a wide variety of local craft beers on the menu. All of Monterey’s main attractions are conveniently located within walking distance of Portola Hotel & Spa too.

Monterey’s first hotel

Another historic hotel, Casa Munras Garden Hotel & Spa was actually Monterey’s first. Today, guests will love the full-service spa, pet-friendly rooms, function space and fitness and business centres. If you’re after something a little extra special, the Manor House Suite includes a sitting room and large workspace. On-site there is Esteban Restaurant, which specialises in Spanish cuisine. Don’t miss Tuesday Paella nights, either. Casa Munras also has a heated pool and bicycle rental for adventurous visitors.
